National Design Excellence Award
Winner
Adam Hobill – The Treehouse
Adam Hobill Design

The design takes inspiration from childhood experiences building treehouses and expresses the challenges and joys of make-shift structures assembled from whatever second hand and leftover materials could be sourced.
The results were commonly very raw, textural and creative expressions of materials presented in their natural condition, displaying their unique character.
In the Treehouse, that expression of materials is seen in the suspended polished concrete floor and is highlighted by the use of OSB formwork to create a textured ceiling finish to the rooms below. The same approach to off-form concrete is also seen in external feature walls and planter boxes. The raked ceiling in the open plan living room is finished in randomly sized timber lining boards as another gesture of the casual nature of treehouses.
The home has been arranged over three levels meld into the sloping site. Upon entry at the mid-level, the home connects immediately with the rear terrace and swimming pool, which has been located to ensure it does not detract from the prime northern outlook to the tree canopy, yet is still well connected to the adjacent living spaces. The master bedroom sits at this level and enjoys morning sun and overlooks the pool.
The open plan family, dining and kitchen is the focal point in the design and has been placed at the upper level and arranged so that the entire space accesses northern sunlight, with the view to the tree canopy showcased by 3.3m high glazing which also connects with a large deck.

Chris Reardon Memorial Award for residential sustainable buildings
Winner
Ashley Beaumont – Warreeny
Beaumont Building Design

The BDAA congratulates Ashley Beaumont – Warreeny, of Beaumont Building Design winning design in the Chris Reardon Memorial Award for residential sustainable buildings category of The 2021 BDAA National Design Awards.
The Warreeny Project designed by Ashley Beaumont from Beaumont Building Design is a modern inspired home drawing from mid-century aesthetics by incorporating horizontal planes, expansive glass and mixed mediums of timber, brick and concrete.
Sustainable limestone masonry has been handcrafted from recycled materials and juxtaposed with radial timber evokes texture and muted colours of its coastal surrounds.
The home adopts passive solar design features to achieve an 8.5 star energy efficiency rating. A central volume takes full advantage of the north orientation and thermal mass creating a comfortable internal temperature year-round. Transparency and openness allow for abundant natural light to permeate internal spaces.
The intent of the interior design is a contemporary interpretation of mid-century residential style and has been executed beautifully with the use of walnut timber battens wrapped around a curved organic form.
Exposed ceiling beams create a graphic statement linking interior and exterior visually leading the eye from one space to the other. The vertical breezeblock wall adds complexity and layering to the outdoor zone to compliment and connect the natural surrounds.
Exterior and Interior specifications for this striking home have been curated to deliver a luxurious lifestyle, sustainably.
Collaboration Award
Winner
Frank Geskus – Trevallyn House
Prime Design

The BDAA congratulates Frank Geskus – Trevallyn House, of Prime Design winning design in the Collaboration Award category of The 2021 BDAA National Design Awards.
Prime Design were not the designers of this project, the concept for the house was not our work. We were engaged to re document the project and make alterations and adjustment to achieve the required minimum 6-star energy rating.
To achieve this took multiple revisions to the energy rating through the NatHERS software and a communicative collaboration between the energy assessor and designer.
Structural items were redesigned to accommodate more insulation, ceiling heights were amended and the focus shifted to increasing the thermal efficiency of the building as a priority while maintaining the aesthetic and overall concept of the home for the client.
To eventually achieve a 6.3 star rating was an excellent result and only possible through the collaboration between the designer and the energy assessor.
Thermal Design Excellence Award
Winner
James Cross – Little Albion
Northern Aspect Energy Consultants

The BDAA congratulates James Cross on his winning of the Thermal Design Excellence Award for his Lite-House Albion design.
Little Albion is the perfect blend between an emerging sustainable designer in Kyle Stacey of Stack Design and an energy assessor focused on thermal improvement and client engagement in James Cross of Northern Aspect Energy Consultants. The back-and-forth process was smooth and always involved open dialogue and Kyle is a pleasure to work with. The process of taking a house that was 5.3 stars on an existing narrow lot and creating a 7.4-star final design was not easy but with 2 minds bringing ideas to the table we managed to complete the process after months of preliminary design work.
The result is a thermally comfortable home that did not need to compromise the architectural design features and was achieved on budget. The house was completed in Early 2021 and recently on a cold winter’s day in Perth where it was 11 degrees outside during the day, the client emailed the designer to comment on the beautiful study space that was sitting at 23 degrees without any added mechanical heating. This feedback is what makes the assessor/designer engagement process worthwhile.

Inspiration for the design of the project comes from the shape of a violin, helping to reinforce the concept of bringing music to the community and highlighting the auditorium. Every space designed in this project is an element of a deconstructed violin reshaped to achieve the best possible functionality of the space.

Commendation
David Halford – Casacurvatura
Sustainable Building Design

The BDAA congratulates David Halford on his winning of the Chris Reardon Memorial Award commendation for residential sustainable buildings for his Casacurvatura design.
Chris Reardon was a great inspiration to those of us trying to introduce energy efficient construction methods. Hopefully he would have been happy to see the high comfort, low energy buildings that the Passivhaus methodology permits. They maintain average temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees all year round, healthy air quality, no condensation or mould and are energy positive in use.
The brief for a house with curves is satisfied with a curved plan, circular rooms, spiral stair to a circular star gazing turret, curved internal walls and a sine curve ceiling. The garden front sweeps around the ridge contours to take in the views to the Baw-Baw ranges. A veranda canopy spirals round this façade, increasing in width towards the east to maintain correct shading to the windows and rises to become the rotunda roof over the circular master bedroom at the east end.
This is balanced at the west end with the roof deck rotunda which is accessed by a spiral stair that peels away from the drum wall. On the opposite façade the curved canopy over the Zen garden has an elliptical opening for a tree to grow through. The geometry is intricate but regular. Roofs and walls are flat planes to simplify construction which enabled prefabricated panels to be used.
The curved entry leads past the circular quiet room with its floating disk ceiling into the central living area. The sitting area is distinguished from the kitchen/dining area by a high sine curve ceiling in blackbutt battens.

Craig Farrugia – 10 Star House
Craig Farrugia Building Design

The BDAA congratulates Craig Farrugia on his winning of the Chris Reardon Memorial Award commendation for residential sustainable buildings for his 10 Star House design.
The brief was simple….. To design and build a very high-performing Secondary Dwelling using passive solar design principles, iterative energy rating assessments, readily available materials and cost-effective construction methods.
A collaborative design approach was utilised, working closely with the builder and thermal assessor throughout the design phase to ensure that the layout of the home itself achieved optimal performance. Materials were then incorporated which would enhance the star rating and thermal comfort of the home, again working closely with the builder and thermal assessor throughout this process to accurately measure the effect on the star rating. Through this process of trial & error a 10 Star NatHERS rating was obtained, the highest possible thermal performance rating.
The predicted annual energy output for all heating & cooling is 6.5 MJ/m2. This equates to a cost of $39 per annum.
This is balanced at the west end with the roof deck rotunda which is accessed by a spiral stair that peels away from the drum wall. On the opposite façade the curved canopy over the Zen garden has an elliptical opening for a tree to grow through. The geometry is intricate but regular.
