Schneider Electric, the global brand automation company and Telsyte, an analyst firm performed a study on the technological demands of consumers living in standard housing.

According to the results, there was an increase of 25% in Australian consumers adding Internet of Things (IoT) devices into their homes to improve the human-home digital interface. The results of the study also show that the percentage of IoT devices will increase by over 100% in the next 4 years, approximate figures state from 17 devices per home today, to 27 devices by 2022.

Clipsal by Schneider Electric’s director of Smart Space Ben Green told the media that “We are now on a threshold; the technology to enable a stylish, connected and sustainable lifestyle in any home is available and affordable. There is a strong appetite for shaking up how to build an electrical system into homes, so homeowners can better manage their devices, electricity, lighting, air-conditioning, and entertainment.”

Green explained that “Lighting is a great first step into automation, with many Aussies using it as a springboard into a range of other areas or devices such as preventing energy wastage and assisting with household chores.” This is based on the results of the Connecting Australia study which showed that 42% of Australians envied friends with automated lighting systems. 39% wanted automated blinds too, 33% were jealous of voice-controlled music, and 28% wanted biometric entry with facial recognition.
