Our upcoming webcast explores two different approaches. Using the Passivhaus approach, the building is sealed, highly insulated and operates using heat recovery ventilation when needed. Passivhaus has proven results over 3 decades in Germany and now 60,000 certified homes globally.
On the other hand, proponents of free-running buildings point out that it is possible to design buildings that need no heating or cooling in most Australian climates. Why live in a mechanically ventilated Esky when you could live in a free-running building, cooled by breezes and heated by the sun?
Passions run hot enough to create an urban heat island on this topic. CSIRO has asked representatives from Passive House Association, Earth Building Society, a building scientist and a tropical free running architect to discuss the issues. What is the best approach for Australia? How should regulators accommodate the two approaches? How should we be aiming to live in an altered climate? Phil’s architectural journey began whilst at University, investigating Australia’s historical regional architecture – when no-one else was! After co-founding Troppo Architects with Adrian Welke, the practice immediately turned to the study and recording of the history of tropical housing in the Top End. After 20 years in the Territory, troppo have established a network of practices around Australia. The practice proudly designs buildings that are dynamically responsive to their particular climate and setting. Their work has been recognised by national and international awards including Australia’s highest architecture award, the AIA Gold Medal (2014), and the Global Sustainable Architecture Award (2010).
Jesse Clarke has more than 17 years’ experience in the construction industry. He holds the technical lead role of the Building Science Manager, servicing Australia and New Zealand. Jesse is an active advocate for a holistic approach to the development of industry guidance, standards and codes.
As the chairman of the AIRAH special technical group for building envelope physics he is driving standardisation around the use of hygrothermal analysis (WUFI®) for healthier and more durable buildings
Kylie is a registered architect and director of BluKube Architecture in Sydney and director of the Australian Passive House Association. Advocating for high performance buildings and ‘building better’, with passivhaus certification a leading pathway for clients to ”get what it says on the box” in relation to building performance and comfort. With industry experience across a variety of small commercial and various residential projects from design through to construction combined with teaching, tutoring and an interest to create a sustainable future Kylie cultivates the idea of comfortable healthy indoor environments to become a reality for all future projects.
Peter Hickson is a Professional Master Builder currently Licensed to conduct Building work in NSW, Australia. He has 31 years experience specialising in designing and constructing homes of raw unfired earth and promoting earth building through training, education and practical example. He was a founding member of the Earth Building Association of Australia, EBAA and has served on the EBAA committee for many years including two years as Vice President and three years as President. He believes homes built of earth have always been the closest in achieving sustainable building practice.
